Recycling in a multi-family setting is more complex than it sounds. It means coordinating hauling logistics while educating residents who may have different habits or varying familiarity with local recycling rules.
Everything you need to get started- and a team ready to help you do it.
The good news? With the right infrastructure and tools in place, you can reduce contamination, increase participation, and make recycling easier- for both residents and staff. Getting recycling right pays off in ways that show up every day- in fewer complaints, happier residents, and a property that runs more smoothly.
Signage That Works
Good signage is your silent educator, and it makes a real difference.
Effective signage should:
- Use images, not just words
- Show both accepted and non-accepted items
- Be posted directly on or above the bin
- Be available in multiple languages
Want free signage? We offer downloadable materials on our website-including translated versions-ready to print and post in your refuse rooms. Click on the poster below to print, or follow this link to our library of free resources.
Color-Coded Containers
Color consistency matters. When waste containers are color-coded consistently throughout the property, residents don’t have to think, they can just act.
In the U.S., the most widely recognized color system is:
- Blue for recycling
- Gray or black for trash
- Green for organics/compost
If your containers don’t follow a consistent color scheme, consider:
- Adding clear, bold labels and signs
- Replacing them over time
Even a colored lid on a neutral container goes a long way in helping users quickly identify the right container.
Location, Location, Location
Even the best-intentioned resident won’t recycle if it isn’t convenient. To improve participation:
- Place recycling directly next to trash receptacles.
- Add recycling and trash stations in hallways, near elevators, laundry rooms, mailrooms, dumpster corrals, and other common areas.
- Keep recycling visible and accessible- avoid tucking recycling behind trash containers or in hidden corners.
If residents have to walk significantly farther to recycle than to throw their trash away, trash will win every time.
Tools and Education
Education isn’t a one-time event- it needs to be ongoing and consistent.
- At move-in, provide a guide on recycling as part of your standard move-in packet (we’ve made it easy with materials on our site! Better yet, walk new residents to property waste stations on move-in day.
- Send an annual recycling reminder-via email or physical handout-to keep best practices top of mind.
- Post educational materials in high-traffic common areas: mailrooms, laundry rooms, lobbies, and refuse rooms. Keep the messaging consistent across all locations.
