As the result of a nationwide search, Kevin joined ecomaine in 2004 and serves as CEO & General Manager. He has worked in the field of solid waste management since 1990, soon after the first sightings of the “garbarge” (garbage barge). His experience has moved him across the country including positions as the Director of Solid Waste for Broome County (New York), Materials Recovery Manager for the City of Glendale (Arizona), Plant Manager for Metro Waste, Owner of a recycling facility in Rochester, New York, Solid Waste Coordinator for Monroe County, and GIS Specialist for the City of Rochester. Kevin is a 1989 graduate of the University of Buffalo, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Geography. He entered the field of solid waste with passion for integrating the mapping of trash collection routes into Geographic Information Systems. At ecomaine, Kevin’s priority is to advance the organization’s mission in providing comprehensive long-term solid waste solutions in a safe, environmentally responsible, economically sound manner and remain a leader in raising public awareness of sustainable solid waste management strategies. Outside of work, Kevin enjoys spending time with his family, wood-working, rooting for the Bills, and on the back of a horse.

Denise Mungen joined ecomaine in September of 2014 with 30-plus years of experience in executive-level administrative support. Throughout her career, she has supported Presidents, the Vice President and Chairman of Academic Affairs. She has managed programs for the Aegis Destroyer Program and USN Department of Defense for the Personnel and Informational Security Program. She also worked on the start-up and management of a community prescription assistance program, providing coordination and support to community physicians for uninsured and underserved patients with chronic medical conditions. She has served on or supported several boards and committees, including the United Way of Mid Coast Maine, St. John’s Catholic Parish, and The Healthy Start Program. She attended New York City Community College and College of New Rochelle, and completed further coursework through University of Southern Maine’s Professional Development Program.

Wei has been with ecomaine since November of 2014 and has been promoted along the way to Finance Manager from Accountant II and his previous position of Accounting Assistant before that. Wei is responsible for Payroll, Accounts Receivable, interfacing with systems and phone support providers,  financial closings, and banking coordination. He is a graduate of the University of Southern Maine, where he was an accounting tutor, with a degree in Accounting & Business Administration. He has a strong background in computer software, is a native of Taiwan and is now a US citizen.

Mark currently serves as ecomaine’s Project & Procurement Manager, managing projects from inception to completion. Formerly, Mark was responsible for employee safety training, which occurs weekly at ecomaine. He is an OSHA certified trainer for general industry, a licensed Maine first class stationary engineer, and an ASME qualified resource operator. In addition, Mark graduated from Central Maine Technical College in 1984 with an Associate Degree in power engineering. He has been with ecomaine since 1988.

Kelly Rickett joined ecomaine as a Payroll/Accounting clerk in May 2019 with over 20 years experience in Payroll, HR and Accounting in the manufacturing field. She joins ecomaine from B&M Baked Beans where she most recently served as an HR Supervisor, Payroll and Accounts Payable Clerk.

Lynn, who has been with ecomaine since 2016, is responsible for ensuring the smooth day-to-day operations of Accounts Payable and Human Resources. Lynn holds an Associate’s Degree in Accounting from York County Community College. Her work experience includes being assistant to the Vice President of Accounts Payable and Receivable for Coastal Concrete and working in Accounts Payable for Tom’s of Maine. She has also owned her own tanning & hair salon and cleaning business.

Erik joined ecomaine after a 31-year career in public works. His past responsibilities included highway & fleet maintenance, project management along with solid waste & recycling for the Town of Yarmouth. He served for 15 years on the ecomaine board of directors, holding various committee positions and officer roles. Erik holds an associate degree in Forest Management Technology from the University of ME- Orono, and an associate degree in architectural civil engineering technology from Central Maine Technical College.

Kevin is a 1986 graduate of Maine Maritime Academy, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in marine engineering operations. He is also an ASME qualified chief/operator. Kevin came to ecomaine in 1987 after employment at a biomass generation facility in Lewiston. He is responsible for overall operation and maintenance of the ecomaine waste-to-energy plant and is a key participant in the senior management team.

Chad is a 2003 graduate of Maine Maritime Academy, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in marine engineering technology. Chad came to ecomaine in 2025 after spending a majority of his career as Chief Engineer aboard an oilfield construction ship and then a Great Lakes self-unloading bulk carrier. He is responsible for management of the ecomaine waste-to-energy plant under direction of the Plant Manager.

After working as a Marine Engineer in the offshore oil industry for over 15 years, Mark Googins has stepped into the role of Maintenance Supervior at ecomaine. Googins graduated from Maine Maritime Academy with a Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering Technology, and brings with him a wealth of knowledge about the field.

Brian graduated from Maine Maritime Academy in 1981 with a Bachelor of Science degree in marine engineering and a minor in nuclear engineering. He joined ecomaine after seven years of engineering experience and has been with ecomaine since 1988. Brian is a certified ASME qualified resource recovery facility operator/shift supervisor and is licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard as a 1st class assistant engineer for steam and 2nd class engineer for motor vessels (unlimited horsepower).

Since 2007, Dr. Hewes has been responsible for ecomaine‘s continuous improvement in environmental protection at the waste-to-energy plant, recycling facility and ashfill/landfill. She has over 30 years of experience between geological/environmental consulting and academic research, with a B.A. in Geology, M.S. in Environmental Science & Management, and Ph.D. in Environmental Studies. Her interests range from air pollution controls to a focus on industrial ecology and the reuse of waste materials. She has been a delegate to the United Nations Conferences for Sustainability in Johannesburg, South Africa (WSSD) in 2002 and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (Rio+20) in 2012.

Mark joined ecomaine in 2008 with 23 years consulting experience in environmental toxicology (human health and ecological risk assessment), environmental chemistry and regulatory compliance. As a technical consultant his work has included waste-to-energy facilities, paper companies, hazardous waste sites, and landfill investigations. In addition to environmental responsibilities, Mark is part of a team that administers ecomaine‘s health and safety management system. He holds a BS in Ecology and Environmental Sciences from the University of Maine (Orono) and has pursued classes in chemical engineering from Northeastern University (Boston).

Communications & Educational Outreach

Lucy brings nearly two decades of communications experience and a passion for sustainability to her work at ecomaine. Born and raised in Maine, she holds a B.S. in Social Policy from Northwestern University and a certificate in Grant Writing from University of Southern Maine. She has served in marketing, public relations, and communications roles in both non-profit and corporate settings, including the Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine, Diversified USA, and MRG. As Director of Communications and Public Affairs, she oversees ecomaine’s education and outreach efforts. This work ensures that all residents of ecomaine communities understand how to sustainably manage their waste and keep Maine beautiful for generations to come.

Project Manager - Multi-Family Recycling Initiatives

Zoe joined ecomaine in December 2024 as the Program Manager for the Multi-Family Recycling Initiative. In this role, she works with the team to enhance recycling programs and promote sustainable waste solutions across Maine’s multi-family housing communities.

Before joining ecomaine, Zoe led Environmental Sustainability at Allagash Brewing Company, Maine’s largest craft brewery. She developed and managed initiatives focused on waste reduction, greenhouse gas emissions monitoring, employee engagement, and more. Through effective collaboration and project management, Zoe helped reduce the brewery’s environmental impact while fostering staff and community involvement in their sustainability efforts.

Originally from Portland, Zoe holds a B.S. in Biology and Chemistry from Manhattan College. She began her career as an environmental educator in New York City, where she worked closely with diverse populations to promote sustainable practices, with a particular focus on responsible waste management and pollution reduction. Since graduating in 2015, Zoe has continued her education with a Certificate in Carbon Accounting from the University of New Hampshire and a Certificate in Corporate Sustainability from New York University. Outside of ecomaine, Zoe serves on the Board of Directors for ClimateWork Maine, a network of Maine businesses and organizations dedicated to addressing climate change while fostering a resilient and sustainable economy.

Zoe’s commitment to sustainability, along with her diverse professional and personal experiences, drives her work at ecomaine. She is excited to leverage her skills to help strengthen Maine’s recycling efforts and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Born and raised in Maine, Dillon is passionate about helping people understand how small actions can make a big environmental impact. At ecomaine, he coordinates marketing and outreach initiatives that educate and inspire communities to recycle better and manage waste more sustainably. Whether through digital campaigns, local events, or community partnerships, he loves finding creative ways to turn complex sustainability topics into stories that stick.

Before joining ecomaine, he worked as an SEO & Performance Marketing Specialist at Helm Digital, where he gained valuable experience in marketing strategy and business growth. He developed and managed campaigns across SEO, paid search, paid social, and email to help e-commerce and lead generation clients achieve measurable results. He holds a B.S. in Marketing from the University of Maine in Orono.

During his free time you can find Dillon camping, hiking, rock climbing, or cooking your next favorite dish.

By combining his background in digital marketing with his commitment to sustainability, he aims to create meaningful connections between people, data, and the planet we all share.

Bea joined Ecomaine as an Environmental Educator in July of 2023. Bea has been working in environmental sustainability since she graduated from the University of Maine with a B.S. in Ecology and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Political Science. Throughout her studies at the University of Maine in Orono she concentrated in sustainability, environmental policy and natural resource management, and worked as a teaching assistant in environmental geology and biology. She also spent time working as a research assistant, working on sustainable aquaculture growth along the coast of Maine, her home state. Bea worked as the sustainability coordinator for sugarloaf where she led the Sugarloaf Area Sustainability Initiative, implemented a successful community recycling station, maintained the community compost facility, managed GHG accounting for the ski resort and guided the mountain to their net-zero by 2030 goals.

Bea has a passion for both teaching and the environment and has found her place in educating communities on sustainable waste management. She loves to spread the word and see people begin to make simple steps to reduce their carbon footprint and better the future of the world. When Bea is not out educating the community about Ecomaine, you will find her outside in the woods or on the ocean where she finds herself the most at home. She loves sailing her boat (saved from the landfill and rebuilt!) in Pemaquid ME, swimming in whatever water she can find, hiking with her dogs, or skiing the slopes.

Before joining ecomaine, Erika worked as the Education and Outreach Coordinator for Lamoille Regional Solid Waste Management District in VT where she developed and delivered programming for schools, businesses, and community groups. Prior to entering the solid waste industry, she taught high school sciences at an independent school.

Erika grew up in NH and earned a B.A in Biology and Minor in Chemistry from Clark University in Worcester, MA. During and after her undergraduate studies, she collaborated on a range of conservation projects with a focus on niche ecology across the Philippines and Belize. Erika also worked for an environmental consulting company conducting migratory bird and rare plant surveys in the Powder River and Shirley Basins in WY.

When Erika is not teaching, she runs a small craft soap and shampoo bar business. She also enjoys traveling, hiking/backpacking, and art.

Erika is excited to bring her enthusiasm for the solid waste world to her new teaching role at ecomaine.

Project Coordinator – Multi-Family Recycling Initiatives

Emily stepped into the role of project coordinator with the Multi-Family Recycling Initiative in 2025. In this position, she develops and delivers new recycling initiatives for multi-family properties in the greater Portland area.

Emily has a background in community engagement and grassroots sustainability. Before joining ecomaine, she worked in Nepal as a Food Security Peace Corps Volunteer leading capacity-building projects surrounding climate smart and nutrition sensitive programming. Closer to home, Emily contributed to municipal climate resilience efforts through the Maine Government Summer Internship program serving as the Climate Mitigation and Assistant Planning Intern for the Lincoln County Regional Planning Commission.

Emily was a triple major in Geography, Gender/Women/Sexuality Studies, and Latin American/Latinx/Caribbean Studies receiving her B.A. from Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota. She has long been interested in place-based initiatives that reflect the values, stories, and priorities of the people who live there. Emily grew up in central Maine and is excited to be back in her home state working at the intersection of community and sustainability.

Sarah joined ecomaine in 2024 as a Project Coordinator for the Multi-Family Recycling Initiatives. She graduated from the University of Southern Maine with a B.S. in Environmental Science, concentrating on sustainability. During her studies, she worked with the New England Environmental Finance Center as a Sustainability Intern and as an Aquaponics Farm Intern at Canopy Farms. She also has worked for Garbage to Garden on their Zero Waste Event Crew, educating the public on best composting practices and diverting as much waste from the landfill as possible.
Growing up in a coastal Maine town has shaped her love for the outdoors and has fostered her ambitions to help create resilient communities through positive and equitable change!
