In 2006, ecomaine opened Maine’s first single-sort recycling facility. Nearly two decades later, that facility is processing roughly 40,000 tons of single-sort recycling annually. Accepted materials include fiber (paper, paperboard, corrugated cardboard, newsprint), #1-7 rigid plastic containers, metal (tin, aluminum, steel), and glass.
Our facility accepts mixed recycling from communities and businesses throughout the state and, using both automated and manual processes, sorts the materials into separate streams, bales the sorted material, and sells materials to a variety of manufacturers and businesses across North America who further process the materials and give them a new life: from new bottles, cans, and boxes to fleece blankets or composite decking.
Over nearly twenty years, the recycling industry – the markets, the composition of the stream, and the technology for processing – have evolved substantially. In a commitment to staying at the forefront of the industry, ecomaine is building an all-new recycling facility in 2026, embracing newer technologies for more efficient processing, safer cleaner conditions, and cleaner material. The new facility, which will be on ecomaine’s existing Blueberry Rd campus, is anticipated to begin accepting materials in the fall of 2026.
