Since 2007, Dr. Hewes has been responsible for ecomaine‘s continuous improvement in environmental protection at the waste-to-energy plant, recycling facility and ashfill/landfill. She has over 30 years of experience between geological/environmental consulting and academic research, with a B.A. in Geology, M.S. in Environmental Science & Management, and Ph.D. in Environmental Studies. Her interests range from air pollution controls to a focus on industrial ecology and the reuse of waste materials. She has been a delegate to the United Nations Conferences for Sustainability in Johannesburg, South Africa (WSSD) in 2002 and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (Rio+20) in 2012.

Arthur Colvin joined ecomaine as a Landfill Manager in December 2014. Colvin came to ecomaine with more than 25 years of experience in surveying and engineering, most recently as a Regional Office Manager at Horizons Engineering. Colvin lives in Freeport, Maine.

Brian graduated from Maine Maritime Academy in 1981 with a Bachelor of Science degree in marine engineering and a minor in nuclear engineering. He joined ecomaine after seven years of engineering experience and has been with ecomaine since 1988. Brian is a certified ASME qualified resource recovery facility operator/shift supervisor and is licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard as a 1st class assistant engineer for steam and 2nd class engineer for motor vessels (unlimited horsepower).

Cal completed a four-year apprenticeship program at Tampa Electric Company, where he worked for ten years before joining ecomaine in 1988. As maintenance supervisor, he oversees ecomaine mechanics, equipment operators, an electrician, the warehouse, instrument and control technicians, and the scale house. In 1995, Cal was instrumental in establishing a computerized preventative maintenance program at ecomaine.

Denise Mungen

Executive Assistant

Denise Mungen joined ecomaine in September of 2014 with 30-plus years of experience in executive-level administrative support. Throughout her career, she has supported Presidents, the Vice President and Chairman of Academic Affairs. She has managed programs for the Aegis Destroyer Program and USN Department of Defense for the Personnel and Informational Security Program. She also worked on the start-up and management of a community prescription assistance program, providing coordination and support to community physicians for uninsured and underserved patients with chronic medical conditions. She has served on or supported several boards and committees, including the United Way of Mid Coast Maine, St. John’s Catholic Parish, and The Healthy Start Program. She attended New York City Community College and College of New Rochelle, and completed further coursework through University of Southern Maine’s Professional Development Program.

Donald Hebert joined ecomaine as Director of Finance and Administration in July 2018 with over 25 years of experience in financial management, including positions as Controller, Chief Financial Officer, and Financial Consultant for businesses in a broad spectrum of sectors. Don joined ecomaine after most recently serving as Director of Corporate Finance and CFO of the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Vermont, and has decades of ties to the telecommunications, manufacturing, and consulting industries in southern Maine.

John Morin came to ecomaine as Recycling Facility Supervisor in 2007and promoted to manager in 2008. With 16 years of experience in recycling and waste operations with facilities similar in size to ecomaine‘s, he was a natural choice for the position. In addition, he has OSHA certifications for hazardous waste, special waste and transfer station operator, and is certified for forklift instruction. He is responsible for the $3.7 million state-of-the-art, single-sort equipment that began operation in May 2007 and for the sale of all processed recycled material on the open market. John is an Auburn native and current resident of Scarborough.

Katrina joined ecomaine in August 2016 with seven years of experience in various Environmental Educator roles in Washington state, Connecticut and Maine. She is responsible for designing curricula, on-site tour programs, and other education and outreach programming that facilitates engaged waste reduction among residents, schools and businesses in ecomaine’s 65 member communities.

Katrina holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biological Aspects of Conservation from University of Wisconsin and various certifications for K-12 conservation education programs from the Council for Environmental Education in Falmouth. Her past roles have included Green Educator at Reiche School, Nature Teacher at Kennebunk Beach Improvement Association, Youth and Outreach Educator at Maine Audubon, and Ecology Educator at The Ecology School in Saco.

Kevin is a 1986 graduate of Maine Maritime Academy, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in marine engineering operations. He is also an ASME qualified chief/operator. Kevin came to ecomaine in 1987 after employment at a biomass generation facility in Lewiston. He is responsible for overall operation and maintenance of the ecomaine waste-to-energy plant and is a key participant in the senior management team.

As the result of a nationwide search, Kevin joined ecomaine in 2004 and serves as CEO & General Manager. He has worked in the field of solid waste management since 1990, soon after the first sightings of the “garbarge” (garbage barge). His experience has moved him across the country including positions as the Director of Solid Waste for Broome County (New York), Materials Recovery Manager for the City of Glendale (Arizona), Plant Manager for Metro Waste, Owner of a recycling facility in Rochester, New York, Solid Waste Coordinator for Monroe County, and GIS Specialist for the City of Rochester. Kevin is a 1989 graduate of the University of Buffalo, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Geography. He entered the field of solid waste with passion for integrating the mapping of trash collection routes into Geographic Information Systems.

At ecomaine, Kevin’s priority is to advance the organization’s mission in providing comprehensive long-term solid waste solutions in a safe, environmentally responsible, economically sound manner and remain a leader in raising public awareness of sustainable solid waste management strategies. Outside of work, Kevin enjoys spending time with his family, wood-working, rooting for the Bills, and on the back of a horse.

Lissa is a graduate of the University of New Hampshire and joined ecomaine in September of 2012. She brings 16 years of sales and recruiting experience from both the International Travel and Bio-Pharmaceutical industries; as well as 3 years of experience in fund raising and Operations for Boston GreenFest (the largest environmental festival in New England). She is responsible for signing on new towns in Maine and New Hampshire to process their recyclable and Municipal Solid Waste at ecomaine as well as working with the Environmental Educator to increase awareness within our member towns about the benefits of Recycling and Waste to Energy.

Lynn, who has been with ecomaine since 2016, is responsible for ensuring the smooth day-to-day operations of Accounts Payable and Human Resources.

Lynn holds an Associate’s Degree in Accounting from York County Community College. Her work experience includes being assistant to the Vice President of Accounts Payable and Receivable for Coastal Concrete and working in Accounts Payable for Tom’s of Maine. She has also owned her own tanning & hair salon and cleaning business.

As operations supervisor, Mark is responsible for employee safety training, which occurs weekly at ecomaine. He is an OSHA certified trainer for general industry, a licensed Maine first class stationary engineer, and an ASME qualified resource operator. In addition, Mark graduated from Central Maine Technical College in 1984 with an Associate Degree in power engineering. He has been with ecomaine since 1988.

Mark joined ecomaine in 2008 with 23 years consulting experience in environmental toxicology (human health and ecological risk assessment), environmental chemistry and regulatory compliance. As a technical consultant his work has included waste-to-energy facilities, paper companies, hazardous waste sites, and landfill investigations. In addition to environmental responsibilities, Mark is part of a team that administers ecomaine‘s health and safety management system. He holds a BS in Ecology and Environmental Sciences from the University of Maine (Orono) and has pursued classes in chemical engineering from Northeastern University (Boston).

Matt Grondin

Matt joined ecomaine in April 2018 and is responsible for all communications, outreach and education programs. Matt holds a bachelor’s degree in Theater Production from the University of Maine, and a master’s degree in Political Science from Suffolk University. Previously, Matt held fundraising, writing, and outreach positions at Maine Public Radio & Television, United Way of Greater Portland, and WGBH in Boston, where he was part of the production team that won a 2011-12 Daytime EmmyTM Award for its work on Design Squad, a children’s engineering TV production.

Matt works on topics of energy conservation and sustainability on the Town of Cumberland’s Energy Advisory Committee. He also served on the Boards of The Summit Project and Portland Ballet.

Matthew Baum joined ecomaine as our Maintenance Manager in September 2018.  Matt is a graduate from Maine Maritime Academy and holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Power Engineering Technology and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration. He also holds a Maine Boilers License and is certified in Six Sigma-Lean.

He joined ecomaine from Westbrook Energy Center (WEC) Calpine where he most recently served as Operations Engineer and was the lead on many special projects.

Michael is a 1986 graduate of Maine Maritime Academy, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in marine engineering and minored in psychology. He is licensed by the United States Coast Guard as a third engineer (steam and motor) and by the State of Maine as a first class stationary engineer, and also has a firefighting certificate. Michael has been with ecomaine since 1989 and is a certified ASME qualified resource recovery facility chief operator/shift supervisor.

Missi has been with ecomaine since 2001. She earned an Associates Degree in Business and a BS degree in Accounting from Husson College. After nearly three years as Recycling Coordinator for ecomaine, she was promoted in 2007 to Program Development Manager, where she oversaw the design and construction of the single-sort recycling facility. In 2012, Missi took a position as the Finance Accountant, and was promoted to Finance Manager in 2016.

Stephen P. Henderson joined ecomaine as Recycling Operations Manager in January 2014. Steve has more than a decade of experience in recycling and facilities operations, most recently as the Operations Manager at the Maine Apple Co.

From the classroom to the compost pile, Vanessa joined the ecomaine team in August of 2018 to provide education and resources to member communities and residents as an Environmental Educator. As an ecomaine educator, her role changes every day. From giving tours, to conducting trash audits with students, her main goal is to encourage others to follow the three R’s: Reduce, Reuse, then Recycle!

Vanessa received her B.S. in Elementary Education at the University of Maine at Farmington in 2015, and found her passion for the environment as a work-study student in UMF’s Sustainable Campus Coalition. She has previously served as an Energy Efficiency Coordinator with AmeriCorps, organized a Green Team at Chelsea Elementary School, and worked one-on-one with students as an Ed. Tech in an Autism and Behavior Program.

Wei has been with ecomaine since November of 2014 and was recently promoted to Accountant II from his previous position of Accounting Assistant. Wei is responsible for Payroll, Accounts Receivable, interfacing with systems and phone support providers, certain aspects of the financial closings, and banking coordination. He is a graduate of the University of Southern Maine, where he was an accounting tutor, with a degree in Accounting & Business Administration. He has a strong background in computer software, is a native of Taiwan and is now a US citizen.

Win joined ecomaine in 2012 to manage projects from inception to completion. In addition to years of experience in project management, he has also been a shipping company chief engineer and a plant engineer at a biomass facility. Win, a Brewer native, is a Maine Maritime Academy graduate, an AWS certified welder, and has additional OSHA training and certifications in industry topics, such as construction cranes and derricks.
