Multi-Family Recycling Initiative

Working alongside communities to make recycling accessible, impactful, and inclusive in apartments and multi-family housing.

Recycling Made Simple for Multi-Family Communities: A New Initiative

Recycling should be simple and accessible for everyone, but for residents of multi-family housing, it’s often not. Limited space, unclear guidance, and inconsistent access create barriers that make recycling more challenging. At ecomaine, we’re working to change that.

With support from the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Recycling Education and Outreach (REO) Grant, we’re launching a program to expand recycling opportunities and make it easier for residents of apartments, condos, and other multi-family properties to participate.

  • The Multi-Family Recycling Team, including Sarah & Zoe, pose with new programming for Piper Shores

Sarah and Zoe share recycling signage and educational material options designed to support clear, consistent recycling practices.

  • Sarah Folan displaying new programming at Piper Shores for the Multi-Family Recycling Initiative

Sarah conducts a routine waste audit at a property, assessing recycling volume and contamination to identify opportunities for improvement.

  • Zoe Malia wheels a recycling bin towards an Ecomaine EV in a parking lot

Our team travels to and from partner properties using an electric vehicle fleet to support on-site education and outreach.

  • Sarah and Zoe install educational signage at Piper Shores to give residents clear, easy-to-follow guidance on recycling and trash use.

  • Educational signage at Piper Shores helps reduce confusion and support proper recycling and waste practices.

  • Sarah Folan presents to a group at Piper Shores in Scarborough, Maine.

Sarah facilitates an educational presentation for Piper Shores residents, creating space for questions and practical guidance on everyday recycling.

  • Portland Housing Authority staff and interns tour the ecomaine facility to learn how materials are processed and how recycling systems support multi-family housing.

  • Staff from the Portland Office of Economic Opportunity tour our facility to better understand local recycling operations.

  • Educational recycling presentation for residents at an Avesta Housing property, focused on building understanding and participation.

How We’re Helping

Our team, Emily, Sarah, and Zoe, is actively developing a program that makes recycling straightforward for both property managers and residents. Best of all, this program is completely FREE. We provide:

  • Customized on-site evaluations – We review your property’s current waste setup (or help implement recycling from scratch) and identify opportunities to make recycling easy, efficient, and cost-effective.
  • Tailored educational materials – Signage, flyers, and resources created for your residents and staff to encourage participation and reduce confusion.
  • Ongoing assistance and check-ins – We’re available to answer questions, track progress, and provide technical support to help your property run smoothly.

Why This Matters

Multi-family housing makes up roughly 21% of Maine’s housing population, yet only 8% of these properties have on-site recycling access. This gap presents a major opportunity to improve recycling rates and ensure that residents in these communities have the same access to recycling as those in single-family homes.

Expanding recycling in multi-family buildings helps reduce waste, conserve resources, and create a cleaner, greener Maine!

Help Shape the Future of Multi-Family Recycling

We’re in the early stages of developing this program, and your input matters! Whether you’re a property manager, resident, or community leader, we want to hear from you. Let’s work together to make recycling work for multi-family communities.
