PORTLAND, Maine (September 3rd, 2026) – ecomaine has been named the recipient of the 2026 Facility Excellence Award from the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA), in the association’s Waste Conversion & Energy Recovery category. The award recognizes ecomaine’s Waste-to-Energy Facility for outstanding performance, innovation, and operational excellence in the waste conversion and energy recovery industry.
“Earning this recognition is a credit to the incredible dedication of all those who contribute to making ecomaine successful, including our work force, our Board Members and our member communities,” says Kevin Roche, ecomaine’s CEO. “ecomaine is a highly respected and trusted organization in our region and we very much value and appreciate this recognition.”
SWANA is a member-based association of more than 10,000 solid waste and resource management professionals across North America, and its Technical Division Awards are among the industry’s most prestigious honors. ecomaine will be formally recognized alongside the other 2026 SWANA honorees at RCon® 2026, SWANA’s annual conference, during a special awards ceremony on September 30th in St. Louis, Missouri.

Ecomaine’s Waste-to-Energy facility has operated in Portland since 1988, processing approximately 175,000 tons of municipal solid waste each year and generating roughly 100,000 mega-watt hours of electricity annually — enough to power the facility itself and approximately 15,000 Maine homes. The facility is ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certified, demonstrating exceptional commitment to both environmental management and health and safety.
The Waste-to-Energy Facility is one of three core operations ecomaine runs for its member communities, alongside its Recycling Facility and Landfill. Together, these facilities allow ecomaine to manage the full lifecycle of waste for the communities it serves, from recycling and energy recovery to final disposal, in keeping with the waste management hierarchy but forth by the Maine DEP.
